I accidentally installed SQL Server 2016 Standard and meant to install SQL Server 2016 Enterprise. I was not able to install Enterprise over the top of Standard due to errors, so I decided to uninstall Standard. There were multiple SQL records found in Control Panel Programs and Features. Finally got down to the last two program entries found in Control Panel Programs and Features. Those two are Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (64-bit) and Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Setup (English).

When I try to uninstall Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (64-bit), I am presented with an error that says 'There are no valid SQL Server 2016 features to perform this operation.' I can uninstall Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Setup (English), but the other entry still produces the same error and when rebooting the server, theMicrosoft SQL Server 2016 Setup (English) entry returns again.The program was installed using the domain admin account and that's what's being used to uninstall.Any ideas? Go to the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
You should be able to see how many instances of what version of SQL Server you have installed very easily from there.If you just installed a second instance next to the original (entirely possible) you may need to uninstall the original. Uninstalling SQL Server is pretty standard stuff, like uninstalling any other piece of software.
You do want to be very careful that you uninstall the correct version & instance though. To start the uninstall process, you can simply launch the SQL Server 2000 installation media. It's fairly straight-forward from there. Just take your time and choose the right instance. SQL Server uninstalls.
If you're trying to uninstall from a VM, sometimes it's better just to blow it away and re-provision the VM from scratch if possible.Short of that, some tips:Manually stop all SQL Server services before running the installer.Even if logged in as an admin user, launch the installer using Run as Administrator.If all else fails you can try of uninstalling using msiexec /x for all components.
